Comparison and Analysis of Control Strategies for Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Résumé

The design of a hybrid powertrain is a complex task, which calls for experts from various fields. Their fuel saving potential greatly depends on their use and the sizing of their components. Several optimal control methods are proposed in the literature like Dynamic Programming (DP) and Pontryaguin’s Minimum Principle (PMP). In this work, they are both compared to an optimized rule-based strategy (RBS) on an extended hybrid powertrain model. A complete analysis of the most efficient control strategy (torque split, engine state and gear shift) is then conducted. Finally, the command’s sensitivity to different powertrain configurations and applications is assessed.
