Fundamentalism as a pathology of the origin
Le fondamentalisme comme pathologie de l'origine
Résumé
Fundamentalism is a symptom of postmodernity, which is characterized by the collapse of the traditional foundations of the subject and by the hegemony of the discourse of science. This symptom calls for interpretation. Thus, fundamentalism reveals to postmodernity an obscured face of itself, due to a confusion between belief and knowledge. As a form of religious scientism, fundamentalism is a pathological way of articulating founding event, textual testimony and desire for the origin, in an attempt to control meaning. In the end, fundamentalism today asks us a double question: what is the meaning of believing and reading?
Le fondamentalisme est le symptôme d’une postmodernité caractérisée par l’effondrement des fondations traditionnelles du sujet conjoint au triomphe du discours de la science. Ce symptôme se prête à interprétation. Ainsi, le fondamentalisme révèle à la postmodernité une face d’elle-même largement occultée, qui tient à un rapport à la croyance falsifié car posé en termes de savoir. Véritable scientisme religieux, il constitue une manière pathologique d’articuler événement fondateur, témoignage textuel et quête de l’origine, selon une logique de maîtrise du sens. Au final, le fondamentalisme nous pose aujourd’hui une double question : qu’est-ce que croire, et qu’est-ce que lire ?
