The theory of recognition: a critical model for education?
La théorie de la reconnaissance : un modèle critique pour l’éducation ?

The author questions the value of recognition theory for education by linking his analysis of the educational process with his critique of neo-liberal society. He highlights the educational structure of the relationship of recognition as it has been constructed in the philosophical tradition of Hegel and Marx and confronts it with the interpretation of Axel Honneth. The question is whether the struggle for recognition is a theoretical model of resistance to the norms of alienation produced by capitalism or a form of adaptation to the realities of the market and its ideologies. Although Honneth situates his concept of recognition in the context of relations of domination and from the point of view of the dominated, he increasingly abandons the historical and social model of struggle for recognition in favour of the normative and prospective model of the ethic of respect for others and the self-affirmation of selfish activity. But is it not when it is understood under the dialectical scheme of "struggle" that recognition theory has its full critical force in questioning the existing order?
L'auteur interroge la valeur de la théorie de la reconnaissance pour l'éducation en mettant en rapport son analyse du processus éducatif et sa critique de la société néo-libérale. Il met en évidence la structure éducative de la relation de reconnaissance telle qu'elle s'est construite dans la tradition philosophique chez Hegel et Marx pour la confronter à l'interprétation d'Axel Honneth. La question est de savoir si la lutte pour la reconnaissance est un modèle théorique de résistance face aux normes d'aliénation produites par le capitalisme ou une forme d'adaptation aux réalité du marché et à ses idéologies. Bien que Honneth situe son concept de reconnaissance dans le contexte des relations de domination et en se plaçant du point de vue du dominé, il abandonne de plus en plus le modèle historique et social de lutte pour la reconnaissance au profit du modèle normatif et prospectif de l'éthique du respect pour autrui et de l'auto-affirmation de l'activité égoïste. Mais n'est-ce pas lorsqu'elle est appréhendée sous le schéma dialectique de la "lutte" que la théorie de la reconnaissance possède toute sa force critique de remise en cause de l'ordre existant?
