Knowledge extraction and modelling in the project Thesaurus Musicarum Germanicarum

This workshop focuses on the modelling of knowledge in the Thesaurus Musicarum Germanicarum project (TMG). I will show how the digitization of historical sources, the possibilities of their electronic investigation, and the perspectives that emerge for the formalization of knowledge constitute both new opportunities and new challenges for a problematized history of concepts. Drawing on examples that range from instrument making to modal theory, I will discuss the formal definition of music-theoretical concepts, their interconnection within knowledge networks and their association with the terms that represent them in the source. The results thus gained, while encouraging, suggest that current standards also reach their limits when it comes to achieving dynamic, critical and ‘situated’ knowledge production. On the basis of this provisional conclusion, I will identify some methodological and disciplinary needs for a digital history of concepts in musicology.

Cet atelier se concentre sur la modélisation de connaissances théoriques dans le projet The Thesaurus Musicarum Germanicarum project (TMG). Il montrera comment la numérisation des sources historiques, les possibilités de leur investigation électronique et les perspectives qui émergent pour la formalisation de connaissances constituent à la fois de nouvelles opportunités et de nouveaux défis pour une histoire problématisée des concepts. A partir d'exemples allant de la facture instrumentale à la théorie modale, je discuterai de la définition formelle des concepts liés à la théorie musicale, de leur interconnexion au sein de réseaux de connaissances et de leur association avec les termes qui les représentent dans la source. Les résultats ainsi obtenus, bien qu'encourageants, suggèrent que les standards actuels atteignent également leurs limites lorsqu'il s'agit de parvenir à une production de connaissances dynamique, critique et "située". Sur la base de cette conclusion provisoire, j'identifierai quelques besoins méthodologiques et disciplinaires pour une histoire numérique des concepts en musicologie.
