Is the idea of the end of history outdated (as contemporary economico-political liberalism triumphantly claims) or is it still valid even if it needs re-imagining along other lines than the Hegelianism and Marxism from which it emerged ? Whether conceived as a theological conundrum, criticised philosophically or redeployed in ethical directions, the end of history points to the possibility of an open world which is worth supporting against all temptations to close it down.
