Aux sources de l’histoire de la construction navale
Résumé
A century before nautical heritage and the reconstitution of traditional or ancient boats became topical, the methodological bases of nautical ethnography and naval archaeology were laid by Edmond Paris. He campaigned to make the boat a monument to be preserved, and to make shipbuilding a topic for historians as were land-based constructions which became a topic for archeology and heritage that developed in the 19th century . This naval officer involved in the maritime revolution, which saw the war and commercial fleets move from sail to steam and from wood to iron, was also able to combine conservation and innovation. Deep-sea shipbuilding, which had reached a level of quality at the end of the 18th century, had to reinvent itself in the 19th century to adapt to steam propulsion. Fascinated by both the engineering genius and the know-how of craftsmen, Paris drew inspiration from traditional technical solutions in order to improve contemporary shipbuilding, in particular machinery, and to make navigation less fuel intensive. He led a reflection on the articulation between form and use and between naval construction and maritime space, the nautical qualities of a boat determining its mobility capacities and the control of a geographical space. Applying his conservative work to the most modern navy, he committed himself to preserving the memory of the stages of the sail/steam transition, while at the same time popularising it by writing technical works to make the designs of scientists and engineers accessible to users of steamships, both sailors and engineers.
Un siècle avant la redécouvertedu patrimoine nautique etles reconstitutions de bateaux traditionnels ou anciens, les bases méthodologiques del’ethnographie nautique et de l’archéologie navale ont été posées par Edmond Pâris. Il a milité pour faire du bateau un monument à conserveret de la construction navale un objet d’histoire dans la logique patrimoniale et archéologique qui se développe au XIXe siècle autour des constructions terriennes. Présenter ce volet des travaux d’Edmond Pâris peut donc s’apparenter à proposer une épistémologie de l’histoire de la construction navale.Cetofficier de marine engagé dans la révolution maritime,qui voit les flottes de guerre et de commerce passer de la voile à la vapeur et du bois au fer,a en outre su conjuguer conservation et innovation. La construction navale hauturière, qui avait atteint un palier qualitatif à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, doit se réinventer au XIXe siècle pour s’adapter à la propulsion par la vapeur; fasciné tant par le génie des ingénieurs que par le savoir-faire des constructeurs artisanaux, Pâris s’est inspiré des solutions techniques traditionnelles pour perfectionner la construction navale contemporaine, en particulier les machines, rendre la navigation moins en combustible. Il a menéune réflexion sur l’articulation entre forme et usage et entre construction navale et espace maritime, les qualités nautiquesd’une embarcation déterminant ses capacités de mobilité et la maîtrise d’un espace géographique. Appliquant son œuvre conservatrice à la marine la plus moderne, ils’est attaché à conserver la mémoire desétapes de la transition voile/vapeurtout en faisant œuvre de vulgarisation par la rédaction d’ouvrages techniques pour mettre les conceptions des savants et des ingénieurs à la portée des usagers des navires à vapeur, marins comme mécaniciens.
