Documentation, archive and the living memory of dance

Abstract : We analyse how professional documentary practice contributes to a living and creative memory of dance. We discuss the consequences of this practice on the concepts of document, documentation and archive. Our inquiry is based on the “Arc_Danse” project directed by the video artist Mario Côté at the University of Quebec at Montréal. An artistic event constitutes a virtual primary document when it becomes a source of information for a receiver and when it manifests itself in a “secondary documentary device”. In addition, a secondary document is an archive provided that it reflects the primary document and is useful for a creative activity, which requires the development of a “tertiary documentary device” of a communicative nature.
