Stefano Evodio Assemani e la collezione orientale della Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana a Firenze

Stefanus Evodius Assemani’s Bibliothecae Mediceae Laurentianae et Palatinae codicum mss. Orientalium catalogus, published in Florence in 1742, is the first and the only comprehensive catalogue of the oriental manuscripts of the Laurentian Library in Florence. It thus represents a doorway to the history of the formation of this complex and cohesive Oriental collection, as well as to its inner structure. It is thanks to Assemani’s organizing effort that the Medicean manuscripts achieve the status of a coherent collection, rather than a rich and precious cabinet of curiosities.
The cataloguing enterprise, as it is presented in the preface to the reader, as well as in the postface by the curator of the catalgue, the learned Florentine Anton Francesco Gori, is inspired by the humanistic ideal of a recovery of the Classical culture, including also its Oriental (Syriac, Arabic, Coptic) interpreters. At the same time, Assemani also intends to celebrate the Medici family’s patronage of the arts, turning its magnificent manuscript collection into a monument.
To do so, Assemani traces back the principles that guided the creator of the collection, the orientalist Giovanni Battista Raimondi (d. 1614), of which he becomes the first interpreter. The fruit of Raimondi’s linguistic curiosity is organized, harmonized and filtered (and biased) by the 18th cent. classifying spirit of the Maronite scholar.
In the last section of the paper, I also present a number of letters that Assemani wrote to Gori, thorough which I reconstruct the various stages of preparation of the catalogue, as well as its broader cultural and political context.
Le catalogue Bibliothecae Mediceae Laurentianae et Palatinae codicum mss. Orientalium catalogus, rédigé par Stefanus Evodius Assemani et publié à Florence en 1742, est le premier et le seul catalogue complet des manuscrits orientaux de la Bibliothèque Laurentienne de Florence. Il représente donc une porte d'entrée dans l'histoire de la formation de cette collection orientale complexe et cohérente, ainsi que dans sa structure interne. C'est grâce à l'effort d'organisation d'Assemani que les manuscrits médicéens atteignent le statut d'une collection cohérente, plutôt que celui d'un riche et précieux cabinet de curiosités.
L'entreprise de catalogage, telle qu'elle est présentée dans la préface au lecteur, ainsi que dans la postface du conservateur de la catalgue (le savant florentin Anton Francesco Gori) s'inspire de l'idéal humaniste d'une récupération de la culture classique, incluant également ses interprètes orientaux (syriaque, arabe, copte). En même temps, Assemani entend aussi célébrer le mécénat de la famille Médicis, en faisant de sa magnifique collection de manuscrits un monument.
Pour ce faire, Assemani remonte aux principes qui ont guidé le créateur de la collection, l'orientaliste Giovanni Battista Raimondi (m. 1614), dont il devient le premier interprète. Le fruit de la curiosité linguistique de Raimondi est organisé, harmonisé et filtré (et biaisé) par l'esprit classificateur du savant maronite du XVIIIe siècle.
Dans la dernière partie de l'article, je présente également un certain nombre de lettres qu'Assemani a écrites à Gori, à travers lesquelles je reconstitue les différentes étapes de la préparation du catalogue, ainsi que son contexte culturel et politique plus large.
