Du mythe au rite, du rite au mythe : les Deux Déesses et le porc en Grèce ancienne

Beyond their apparent remoteness, the myth of Demeter and Korè-Persephone, as transmitted by the Homeric Hymn to Demeter, and the ritual of the Thesmophoria, as it can be known through a late text and significant but too few archaeological remains, are clearly linked in their agrarian meaning and their evocation of the cycle of vegetation, more precisely of the nourishing wheat. Absent from the oldest literary version of the myth, the pig is nevertheless the primordial signifying element of the rite. He plays in it basically the same role as Kore-Persephone in the myth. The natural behaviour of the animal, what it embodies and symbolises, explain this factual assimilation, which goes back to a very ancient history and an Indo-European folklore background; they enlighten both the myth and the rite, and ensure the junction between the fertility of the fields and that of women. But if the rite of the Thesmophoria can be explained in this way, it obviously does not exhaust all the readings of the myth.
Au-delà de leur éloignement apparent, le mythe de Déméter et Korè-Perséphone, tel qu’il est transmis par l’Hymne homérique à Déméter, et le rituel des Thesmophories, tel qu’on peut le connaître à travers un texte tardif et des vestiges archéologiques significatifs mais trop peu nombreux, se rejoignent à l’évidence dans leur signification agraire et leur évocation du cycle de la végétation, plus précisément du blé nourricier. Absent de la version littéraire la plus ancienne du mythe, le porc est pourtant l’élément primordial signifiant du rite. Il y joue fondamentalement le même rôle que Korè-Perséphone dans le mythe. Le comportement naturel de l’animal, ce qu’il incarne et symbolise, expliquent cette assimilation de fait qui remonte dans une histoire très ancienne et un fonds folklorique indo-européen ; ils éclairent à la fois le mythe et le rite, et assurent la jonction entre la fécondité des champs et celle des femmes. Mais si le rite des Thesmophories peut s’expliquer ainsi, cela n’épuise évidemment pas toutes les lectures du mythe.
