La guillotine, symbole révolutionnaire ambivalent – Toulouse, janvier 1794
Résumé
This article, based on a spoken tribute to Michel Vovelle, aims to study a failed execution in Toulouse in January 1794. The description of this execution will be used to understand the revolutionary tendencies towards the use of the guillotine and to better define the legal repression in the Toulouse area. Furthermore, this failed execution is a cornerstone to the study of the rising of the guillotine’s black legends and highlights the existence of a certain discomfort on the matter, even before the “Thermidorian reaction”, in Toulouse as well as in Paris. This article also aims to cover a subject both at a local and national scale, using micro and macro-analysis through the topic of the guillotine in order to approach one of the central concepts of Michel Vovelle’s works: the revolutionary mindsets.
Cet article, issu d’une communication orale en hommage à Michel Vovelle, se propose d’étudier une exécution ratée à Toulouse en janvier 1794. Il s’agira, par la description de cette exécution, d’interroger les sensibilités révolutionnaires face à la guillotine et de caractériser la répression judiciaire dans l’espace toulousain. Par ailleurs, cette exécution ratée constitue un prisme pour interroger la construction de la légende noire de la guillotine et mettre en évidence l’existence d’une gêne à son endroit avant la réaction thermidorienne, à Toulouse certes, mais aussi à Paris. Ainsi, cet article se propose d’effectuer un aller-retour entre échelle locale et échelle nationale, micro et macro-analyse pour, par l’intermédiaire de la guillotine, tenter d’approcher l’un des concepts centraux de la pensée de Michel Vovelle : les mentalités révolutionnaires.
