Évolution des meules rotatives de l'âge du Fer au Moyen Âge en France : exploitation de la base de données du PCR Meule

Abstract : The quern and millstone database of the Groupe Meule (France), as of May, 2014, comprised 3963 entries. Most range from the Middle/Late Iron Age to the Roman period. Instead of applying a method of classification favouring certain criteria over other, an automatic method was applied resulting in an objective identification of chronological or regional groups. The initial results drawn from the statistics and distribution maps have focused on the following questions: diameter evolution, changes of tentering features correlated to grinding surface angles, spatial and chronological significance of handle fittings, identification of regional mill types, and specificity of Late Iron Age rotary querns and their evolution in the later Roman times.
