De la plume à l’oreille : composition, interprétation et diffusion du poème « Venid vencedores… » de Juan Bautista Arriaza

Abstract : Composed by Juan Bautista Arriaza in tribute to the victory won at Bailén against the French on 22 July 1808, the poem « Venid vencedores...» aroused the interest of at least five composers, who set it to music immediately and in the following decades. Here are highlighted the reasons for this long-term success, since some of the resultant songs are still interpreted and even recorded after the celebrations of the 200 anniversary of the Peninsular War. This paper focuses particularly on Fernando Sor’s music, explaining why it has remained famous.
