For these reasons, the illuminations of the Master of Wavrin, with their light execution and great conciseness, their parsimonious decoration and their emphatic gestures, could be suspected of offering only a glimpse of the text that gives a broad view of the story. Analysis proves that this is not the case and that the master knew the text in every detail. This is what we will see when we look at the Othovian manuscript that he illuminated, now preserved in Chantilly. In order not to restrict the images to the narrative function that they duly fulfil and which has already been demonstrated, I would like to prove that the miniatures of the Master of Wavrin organise the text in the manner of a narrator, that they are narrators, that they therefore fulfil the functions traditionally devolved to the narrator such as the function of direction, the function of communication or the explanatory and symbolic function, and that, consequently, they form an enlightened and subjective view of the novel.
