Le locatif dans la construction existentielle en français et en espagnol
Résumé
French "il y a" and its Spanish equivalent "hay" are both existential presentational constructions (EPC). If a locative assures the anchoring of the rhema, it is expected to open the EPC due to thematic structure principles. However, our data show that both existentials clearly differ with respect to the unmarked position of the spatial locatives in the EPC. Spanish "hay" prefers preverbal position, but French "il y a" puts the locatives systematically after the verb, either between the verb and the NP (mostly adverbs) or after the NP (mostly PP). French preverbal PP may be explained in terms of guaranteeing the cohesion of the PP with the EC. The disparity between both languages could be a sign that "il y a" has become a presentational device for introducing referents into the discourse (and therefore all elements of the proposition logically follow), and this to a much larger extent than "hay".
