Isolation Enhancement in Microstrip Patch Antenna Arrays

Abstract : Collinearly placed patch antenna arrays, printed on high permittivity dielectric substrates, suffer from an unwanted inter element coupling due to strong surface waves. A new shaped Defected Ground Structure (DGS) is proposed to suppress such waves in between elements. A low dimensional μ shaped DGS is carved out in between two E-plane patch antennas to reduce considerably the amount of coupled power and effectively improve return loss and impedance bandwidth of antenna elements. Parametric simulation results are analyzed and discussed.
