On the free flight behavior of a spinning projectile fitted with fins: a comparative study between twisted fins versus canted ones

Résumé

An aerodynamic analysis was initiated to understand the behavior of two spinning projectiles fitted with fins. This analysis is being performed by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations (CFD) and wind-tunnel experiments. The purpose of this work is to validate an aerodynamic design and prediction tool dedicated to projectiles fitted with fins. In the future, this tool will be used to compare and optimize aerodynamic configurations in order to increase the range of innovative artillery shells. In the present paper, investigations were firstly carried out to highlight aerodynamic characteristics of only one configuration.
