Une stèle en contexte domestique : la statue-menhir du Puech de la Cabane (La Rouvière, Gard)

Abstract : The statue-menhir of Puech de la Cabane was lying in a cellar paired in a habitat built of dry stone. It was obscured at the beginning of the 25th century BC by holders of Fontbouisse ceramics. The monolith has been preserved in its integrity. As part of this detailed study, we publish the statue-menhir of Le Grès at Sainte-Anastasie also unpublished which has strong morphological and stylistic similarities with that of Puech de la Cabane. The Fontbuxiens du Puech de la Cabane place their stele-statue face down (to hide his face?). This gesture evokes a protection, something that ends: end of a cycle of occupation? end of a rite? end of a hegemony? This statue-menhir is part of a unity of style and space: the gardois western group consists of 8 anthropomorphic slabs. Each of these steles except that of the Puech de la Cabane has suffered vicissitudes (broken, impacted or transformed) that we propose to situate in synchronism with their symbolic function. We hypothesize iconoclastic intentions. This would be the moment of the end of a cycle of ideas. These broken and disfigured stelae are then rejected out of their functional space. During this episode, the statue-menhir of the Puech de la Cabane is tipped and concealed with care to preserve it. Radiocarbon locates this ideal break in the middle of the Third millennium ; la lithôlatrie (worship stone slabs) to the idols of the gardois western group would end at this time.
