The Irish in France: Assessing Changes in the Profile of Irish Emigrants over the last 30 years

Abstract: The study of Irish emigration to France in the contemporary period is a relatively under-researched topic. One of the principle research studies available on Irish people living in France, more precisely Paris, was carried out by Piaras MacEinri in the late 1980s and allowed the first profile of this group to be established. In the intervening years, this migrant group has been largely ignored in Irish diaspora studies. The “Irish in France Research Project” was set up to examine the profile of Irish emigrants in France today. Through an analysis of the responses to an on-line questionnaire which was filled in by over 200 Irish people based in France, this article proposes to compare the situation of the Irish in France today with MacEinri’s findings 30 years ago by evaluating key changes in the make-up of this migrant group over the past 30 years.
