CONTEMPORANEOUS CONFIGURATIONS OF AGRARIAN REFORM RURAL SETTLEMENTS: the appearance of new generations and the construction of new life projects

CONFIGURAÇÕES CONTEMPORÂNEAS DOS ASSENTAMENTOS RURAIS DE REFORMA AGRÁRIA: o surgimento de novas gerações e a construção de novos projetos de vida

The objective of this paper is to analyze how the process of succession and generational coexistence occurs in the agrarian reform rural settlements by means of a case study in the biggest settlement in the state of São Paulo. The investigation theoretical and methodological framework brought to light some categories which are not commonly used in the settlements studies. These categories articulate classical and contemporary sociological theories and they have making possible to realize by another angle the metamorphoses that are taking place at these spaces. By comparing the life projects and the life objectives that motivated the first generation to join the land fight and the second generation to stay at the territory it was possible to understand that due to the fragile public policies and the precarious assistance the individuals of the second generation decided to look for different strategies to stay in the settlement. These strategies included the diversification of the rural and non-rural activities and the search for other forms of exchange the products. In this sense it has been possible to identify a significant modification between the farmer’s ethos and the agrarian reform individual, and a new identity that led the second generation to be more linked to the income and to manners of having access to consumption.

O objetivo do presente artigo é analisar como ocorre o processo de sucessão e coexistência geracional nos assentamentos de reforma agrária por meio de um estudo de caso no maior assentamento do estado de São Paulo. As bases teórico-metodológicas da investigação trazem categorias de análises pouco usuais em estudos de assentamentos, articulando teorias sociológicas clássicas e contemporâneas, o que possibilita perceber por outro ângulo as metamorfoses que vêm ocorrendo nessas localidades. Partindo da comparação entre os projetos e objetivos de vida que motivaram a primeira geração a entrar na luta pela terra com os da segunda geração para permanecer no lote, foi possível interpretar que as frágeis políticas públicas e a precária assistência técnica levam os sujeitos da segunda geração a elaborar distintas estratégias de permanência, que compreendem a diversificação das atividades agrícola e não agrícola e a busca de novos mercados. No mesmo sentido, foi possível identificar uma mudança significativa no que se tinha como ethos camponês e do sujeito da reforma agrária, para uma nova forma de identidade da segunda geração, mais ligada à busca de renda e ao acesso ao consumo.
