Characteristic Mode Theory to Enhance the Isolation Level for Full-Duplex 5G in Mobile Handsets

Résumé

This paper studies the design of a two-port dualband antenna system for 4G MIMO Half-Duplex (HD) and 5G TX/RX Full-Duplex (FD) communications. The work will focus mainly on the use of the characteristic modes of a mobile chassis to enhance the isolation level between the two Planar Inverted-F Antenna (PIFA) ports. Three different mobile chasses were studied and finally a size of 140 mm×70 mm, suitable for smartphones was chosen. Two identical slotted PIFA with parasitic elements were the candidates for this mission. The results of this study show that the use the theory of characteristic modes (TCM) allows to better design high isolated antennas. As a result, TCM can facilitate the design of MIMO HD and FD technologies at the level of mobile handsets.
