Difficultés empiriques et théoriques de la définition d’une population d’enquête : le cas des « solos »

Abstract : Many indicators (statistical, sociological, cultural, media, etc.) highlight the appearance of what we call a new way of life: the “solo”. This part of the population shows some common characteristics in how they organize their life: they are socially active, independent, usually single, etc. Despite the existence of these data, which help understand this phenomenon, the category “solo” does not receive a proper investigation in sociological works, and when it does, it is not well defined. The topic of my thesis is these “solos”. This article aims at providing a better understanding on this term by presenting where it comes from and what it means. Therefore, my field work was a constant voyage back and forth between the theory and empirical evidence in order to draw outlines of a deep and complex reality.
