Concevoir des structures à double courbure avec les surfaces Weingarten-Linéaires

Abstract : Freeform structures such as membranes and gridshells combine structural efficiency with architectural elegance. The form-finding of these structures is complex, and is the result of a compromise between structural performance, fabricability and aesthetic. In this article, we propose a novel form-finding method based on the generation of the so-called Linear Weingarten surfaces. These surfaces naturally correspond to equilibrium shapes of membranes under uniform pressure. Furthermore, under this type of loading, principal curvature and stress directions are aligned. Our method allows for a simple generation of these surfaces on a target boundary. It offers an immediate feedback on the expected internal stresses in the case of a tensile membrane, and on the stresses under constant pressure in the case of a shell. One notable application is the design of gridshells, for which ease of fabrication and mechanical performance can be combined.
