Roland Furieux et Philandre sur le métier de Jean des Gouttes

In 1544 Jean des Gouttes launched two complementary literary projects : he directed a collective effort to adapt a famous romanzo and he composed a new narrative drawing on different hypotexts, especially in Italian. These two projects, Roland Furieux and Philandre, were published in the same year by related printers and helped to make this Lyon scholar, who certainly belonged to a creative and editorial network that stood for the defense of the vulgar, the promoter of a new chivalric literature in French. The introductory peritext of both editions reveals his paradoxical conception of innovative writing, building on the existing narrative sources.
Jean des Gouttes se lance en 1544 dans deux projets littéraires complémentaires : la direction d’un travail collectif dans le but d’acclimater un romanzo illustre et la composition personnelle d’un récit neuf à partir de différents hypotextes, en particulier italiens. La publication de Roland Furieux et de Philandre la même année chez des imprimeurs en relation contribue à faire de ce lettré lyonnais, certainement intégré à un réseau créatif et éditorial attaché à la défense du vulgaire, le promoteur d’une nouvelle littérature chevaleresque en français. Le péritexte liminaire des deux éditions fait apparaître la conception qu’il peut avoir de l’innovation dans le domaine : celle-ci repose paradoxalement sur l’imprégnation plus ou moins fidèle d’œuvres narratives déjà écrites.
