La particule ge- : un marqueur de pluralité transcendée

Abstract : In Modern German, the particle ge- enters into the formation of compound nouns and the past participle. The study of the aspectual “perfective” function attributed to this particle in earlier stages of the language (Middle High German, Old High German, as well as in Gothic) shows that the various manifestations of ge, in either verb- or noun-compounds, all express the same “unifying” vision: a plurality is grasped as, that is subsumed into, a singular whole. This occurs on the enonciative level — whereby a process is freed from its situational immediacy — as well as on the notional level (in “semantic” verb- and noun-compounds). The canonical distinction between the categories of noun and verb is thus called into doubt.
Résumé : La particule allemande ge- est surtout connue, en allemand contemporain, pour entrer dans la composition nominale et dans la formation du participe passé. L’étude de la fonction aspectuelle “perfective” attribuée à cet augment en des états plus anciens de langue (vieux haut allemand, moyen haut allemand, ainsi qu’en gotique), montre que les diverses manifestations de ge-, tant en composition verbale qu’en composition nominale, relèvent toutes d’une même visée “unifiante”. C’est l’opération d’une saisie d’une pluralité sous un entier singulier, que celle-ci se manifeste au niveau énonciatif — dégageant le procès de son immédiateté situationnelle — ou au niveau notionnel (dans les “composés sémantiques” aussi bien nominaux que verbaux). La distinction canonique entre la catégorie du nom et celle du verbe se trouve ainsi remise en cause.
