Représentations de l'amour et univers culturels juvéniles : réception des images de l'amour par les 8-13 ans

Abstract : This paper is part of a broader reflection on the role of cultural products in the transmission of romantic norms. It focuses on the reception of cultural images of love by 8-to 13-year-olds. Representations of love are captured through sixty interviews with teenagers attending late elementary or early middle school, who were questioned about their cultural practices, and about perceptions of love in the cultural products they consume. Our analyses reveal that the interviewees display some distance towards cultural images of love, of which they highlight the fictitious aspect, but at the same time their reception of these images emphasizes strong internalized norms. Interviewees consider love in one specific monogamous and heterosexual setting, with distinct male and female roles. Finally, we observe a discrepancy between male and female timings regarding love since childhood: boys express interest in this subject later than girls, and girls internalize stronger parenthood expectations.
