A direct and simple method for rapidly counting viable chains of Leuconostoc in batch cultures

Abstract : Plating determines the concentration in viable cells of bacteria but remains time-consuming and inaccurate. A direct and simple method combining two techniques, haemacytometry and epifluorescence, gives both the viability and the concentration in viable cells. The method was evaluated using Leuconostoc mesenteroides.
