Une incompréhension de la pauvreté ? : La crise du Mont-de-Piété de Paris à la Belle Époque

Abstract : The Mont-de-Piété of Paris owned the monopoly of pawnbroking in the capital city and this practise was based on a highly moral vision: the point was to offer a charitable credit, thought of as a form of assistance for the poorest. However, this inscription in the world of charity and a failure to understand the economic and social changes that affected the Parisian working classes at the time, caused great operational difficulties which led the institution in a deep crisis. This one is only resolved by its transformation into Municipal Credit − that is to say in a bank − in 1919.
