STUDYING THE SPATIAL VARIABILITY OF SOIL PROPERTIES WITHIN THREE MAPPING UNITS

On a 5600 ha area of a 1/25 000 soil map From Brittany (France), the variability within the three major mapping units is studied. Sampling and data analysis at several lags of distance have allowed to quantify variability within the mapping units and to describe the scale of variability of the studied properties. The scale of spatial variability within the mapping units follows two kinds of behaviour : (i) The « soil depth » behaviour : almost all variability within a mapping unit is present in a single delineation ; (ii) The "percent clay in the upper horizon» behaviour : variability ls low within a mapping unit delineation, but occurs between two different delineations.

Sur un secteur de 5600 ha ayant fait l'objet d'une cartographie pédo!logique à l'échelle du 1/25 000, on cherche à décrire la variabilité spatiale de propriétés du sol au sein de trois unités cartographiques. Un échantillonnage et une analyse à différents pas de distance ont permis de quantifier la variabillité au sein des unités cartographiques et de décrire l'échelle de variablité des propriétés étudiées.
