Croissance démographique, paysage politique et diversification culturale dans la région des Grands Lacs. La variable démographique, indicateur et témoin de la diffusion des plantes américaines, entre histoires centrale et périphériques

Abstract : This study derives from an obvious assumption, if not a postulate, so the hypothesis appeared grounded: the historical evolution of the Great Lakes Region would be a convergence between ecological positive background, successful economy-population and political building, would be a connection, during the sixteenth to nineteenth century, between the American plants and new demographical, political process. The analysis of the densities and demographical regimes confirms this link (a geographical and historical correlation), corrects this first vision and unveils a complexity, stops about overlooked peripheral populations and societies, in the shadow of the central kingdoms, and for this reason somewhat forgotten. The “package” of American plants changes according to spaces and societies, much more in the West side than in the East side of the GLR, in the kingdoms and in stateless societies, and the dissemination of these new plants suggests multiple connections. This study revises the geopolitical reading of GLR and envisages a kind of soft connection, upstream of the nineteenth century roads, exchanges axis.
