La question du destin dans Der Tod des Vergil. Hermann Broch et Theodor Haecker

Abstract : Hermann Broch and Theodor Haecker have “similar conceptions of philosophical understanding of History” (Paul Michael Lützeler). But in a letter dated on 19 january 1935, Broch distanced himself from Haecker’s Catholic and “Platonic spirituality” because in his eyes it’s too weak to fight against National Socialist ideology. Both Theodor Haecker’s essay Vergil. Vater des Abendlandes and Broch’s novel Der Tod des Vergil refer to the latin poet in order to cast light on the dynamic of Occident. The question of destiny is in the novel closely linked with Haecker’s theological perspective. To what extent is Haecker’s “Adventist” conception enlightening for Broch’s unprecedented novel?
