Abstract. A survey is drawn up about works and new experiences after 8 successive archaeological missions in Sahel. The presentation realizes a temporary synthesis collecting the essential data of the lately recognized rock art in a context of contemporary supposed settlements. Although vague, still in their early stages or scarcely audible, the written source materials and the oral traditions, showing in a particular lightning the rock art of the latest sahelian protohistory. By proposing a number of paradigms, sometimes as hypotheses or as food for thought, the set contributes to register these different testimonies in a history beginner already in contact with the Middle Ages of North Africa and the Mediterranean Sea. The site of Markoye ( Burkina Faso ) realizes the meeting of two worlds: "Berber" and Saharan in North, western African in the South. They converged and established a cultural group registered without ambiguity in the Berber area. Original in many respects, this entity marks the beginning of the cultural and economic influence of the direct ancestors of the current touareg on Sahel with the neighborhoods of Niger, towards the end of the first millennium of the Christian era and the beginning of the following millennium.

Résumé. Cette présentation réalise une synthèse provisoire rassemblant les données essentielles de l’art rupestre dans un contexte d’habitats supposés contemporains. Quoique incertaines, balbutiantes ou à peine audibles, les sources écrites et les traditions orales, apportent d’intéressants éclairages sur l’art rupestre de l’extrême fin de la Protohistoire sahélienne. En proposant un certain nombre de cadres conceptuels, parfois à titre d’hypothèses ou d’axes de réflexion, l’ensemble contribue à inscrire ces divers témoignages dans une histoire commençante déjà en liaison avec le Moyen-âge de l’Afrique du nord et de la Méditerranée. Le site de Markoye (Burkina Faso) matérialise la rencontre de deux mondes : « berbère » et saharien au nord, africain de l’ouest au sud. Ils ont convergé et ont constitué un ensemble culturel inscrit sans équivoque dans l’aire berbère. Originale à plus d’un titre, cette entité marque le début de l’emprise culturelle et économique des ancêtres directs des touareg actuels sur le Sahel des abords du Niger, vers la fin du premier millénaire de l’ère chrétienne et le début du millénaire suivant.
