Helping L2 Learners Improve their Understanding of Different Accents: Helping L2 Learners Improve their Understanding of Different Accents

Abstract : This poster gives an overview of a study carried out in a C1 level English class in a French engineering school, focused on helping students improve their understanding of a variety of different accents in (L2+) English. The study involved watching a film in the target accent, followed by sentence-level training exercises in the target accent. It was demonstrated that, while neither of these activities independently led to statistically significant improvement in students' understanding of the target accent, taken together, overall improvement in understanding was statistically significant.
