Helping L2 Learners Improve their Understanding of Different Accents

This poster gives an overview of a study carried out in a C1 level English class in a French engineering school, focused on helping students improve their understanding of a variety of different accents in (L2+) English. The study involved watching a film in the target accent, followed by sentence-level training exercises in the target accent. It was demonstrated that, while neither of these activities independently led to statistically significant improvement in students' understanding of the target accent, taken together, overall improvement in understanding was statistically significant.
Ce poster donne un aperçu d'une étude réalisée dans une classe d'anglais de niveau C1 dans une école d'ingénieur française, visant à aider les étudiants à améliorer leur compréhension d'une variété d'accents différents en anglais (L2 +). L'étude a consisté à regarder un film dans l'accent ciblé, suivi d'exercices d'entraînement au niveau de la phrase dans l'accent ciblé. Il a été démontré que, même si aucune de ces activités ne conduisait de manière indépendante à une amélioration statistiquement significative de la compréhension de l'accent cible par les étudiants, après les deux activités, l'amélioration globale de la compréhension était statistiquement significative.
