L’État à la lumière d’un formulaire. La feuille signalétique des agents des ponts et chaussées (1856)

Abstract : A new form, the “descriptive sheet,” appeared at the French Ministry of Public Works in 1856. Taking this bureaucratic document as the object of study, we aim to identify developments within the nineteenth-century state administration through this material vestige of its routine activity and to contribute to the neglected history of the state as employer. After situating this form in the history of administrative evaluation practices, we will revisit the circumstances of its adoption and the issues associated with its use. This history is the lens revealing the possibilities that printed documents offered to the state construction process, changes in the relations between governmental and administrative spheres, and the aspirations to self-administration of a divided civil servant corps.
