MULTISCALE ANALYSIS OF IONOSPHERIC DISTURBANCES MEASURED BY DEMETER SATELLITE

LA DYNAMIQUE FRACTALE DES PERTURBATIONS SÉISMO-IONOSPHÉRIQUES ENREGISTRÉES PAR LE MICRO-SATELLITE DEMETER

Résumé

The ionospheric signatures related to the telluric phenomena, such as earthquakes, tsunamis or volcanic activities express a particular coupling between the solid Earth and their various fluid envelopes surrounding it. Such phenomena are of great importance, because they occur between a few hours and a few days before the shock, and then, they can be considered as short term precursors. DEMETER is the first satellite devoted and optimized to study the correlation between seismo-electromagnetic phenomena and iono-magnetospheric perturbations In this study, we address the statistical analysis under the multiscale framework to analyze ionospheric disturbances. Time series generated by complex dynamic systems, exhibit fluctuations on a wide range of time scales and/or broad distributions of the values. In both equilibrium and non-equilibrium situations, the natural fluctuations are often found to follow a scaling relation over several orders of magnitude. Such scaling laws allow for a characterisation of the data and the generating complex system by fractal scaling exponents. The DEMETER data base includes numerous temporal series of measurements. Among the whole data experiment collected on board, we focus on the plasma particle data. Measurements made by the Instrument Plasma Analyzer (IPA), let us access to a wide range of perturbations indicating the fluctuations of temperature, density (the majority of ions NH + , NHe + , NO +), velocity of local plasma ions and its flow direction. While the Demeter Langmuir Probe Instrument (ISL) measures total density of the plasma, electron temperature and potential of satellite. Spectral analysis of the time series obtained from measurements recorded above of Tanzania (volcanism) exhibits a power law behaviour, typical of fractal self affine process. Thus, the possibility that these time series show the scale invariance associated with long range correlations led us to propose the use of Continuous Wavelets Transformed as a natural tool for investigation of ionospheric perturbations. For all the analyzed physico-chemical variables, we illustrate that the wavelet based estimator delineate the different ionospheric signatures (before, co and post-seismic) produced by the precursors or the aftershocks seismic events. Let us note that these observations are in good agreement with the elastic diffusion process involved in the ionosphere. Although the underlying causes of the observed fractal scaling are often not identified in detail, the fractal description can be used for modelling the time series and deriving predictions regarding extreme events or future behaviour.
