Description, Evolution, Judgment and Adaptation of a Genre: The case of zan Celebration in the Wenxin diaolong

Abstract : This paper shows how Liu Xie's description of the zan (celebration) genre in the Wenxin diaolong is accurate and takes into account the lability of this form of writing through time. The incoherences of the category decried by many readers of the Wenxin diaolong reflect the transformations the genre went through, as the celebrations that were handed down to us also make manifest.
