Abstract : Advocates of a reform of French nationality law that aims to limit the automatic appliance of birth right (jus soli) to children born in France from foreign parents often use the argument that, in the history of nationality, jus soli has never had the same place or importance as descent (jus sanguinis). Yet, a careful perusal of the texts and parliamentary debates shows that this is not the case.
