Social memory and cultural heritage: scientific practices transmission in a Brazilian herbarium
Memória social e patrimônio cultural: a transmissão de práticas científicas em um herbário brasileiro
Résumé
This paper explores the role of ICN Herbarium in the transmission of scientific practices, specifically those in the field of Botany, taking the concepts of social memory and cultural heritage as a guideline. The ICN Herbarium belongs to the FederalUniversity of Rio Grande do Sul. Our research is interdisciplinary and based on participant observation and in depth interviews. The results show how science is done and how labor is divided in the Herbarium and its role as laboratory and space of reference and consultation. In conclusion, we believe that ICN Herbarium is at the heart of a system of objects and practices that ensures the continuity of the ways of doing and of scientific knowledge in life sciences. Therefore, the value of its scientific heritage is not restricted to the material aspects of its collection.
O artigo explora o papel do Herbário ICN, vinculado à Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, na transmissão de práticas científicas próprias à área da botânica, tomando por orientação os conceitos de memória social e patrimônio cultural. Trata-se de uma pesquisa interdisciplinar, pautada por observação participante e entrevistas, resultando em como se dá o fazer ciência e a divisão do trabalho por meio do Herbário, bem como o seu papel como laboratório e espaço de consulta e referência. Como conclusão, sugere-se que Herbário ICN é o nódulo de um sistema de objetos e práticas que garante a continuidade de modos de fazer e saberes científicos nas ciências da vida. Seu valor de patrimônio científico não se restringe, portanto, aos aspectos materiais de sua coleção.
