Proposition de restitution numérique de l’Artémis de Délos : polychromie originelle et contexte architectural initial

Abstract : It is hard to imagine a Hellenistic sculpture with a bright polychromy or covered with gold ... the light playing on the contours of the painted or gilded marble ... the staging of this work in a dedicated architectural space ... While first attempts of graphic renditions of the Greek works’ polychromy have appeared in the nineteenth century, survey and analysis methods of the pigments remain sketchy and three-dimensional experiments are very unusual. Recent advances in tools of scientific digital imaging have allowed to highlight the presence of gold leaf and very bright polychromy on the Greek Delos sculptures (collaborative work since 1999 by Philippe Jockey (French School of Athens) and Brigitte Bourgeois (Centre for Research and restoration of the Museums of France). Under the European Archéomed program (2006-2008) conducted in collaboration with CNRS, the Institute of Science and Information of Pisa, the French School of Athens, the Athens Archaeological Museum and the Centre for research and Restoration of the Museums of France we have proposed a digital restoration of the polychromy of Artemis of Delos. This three-dimensional restoration of the work with its original colors and its virtual re- contextualization has helped to identify the benefits, but also the constraints and limitations of such an approach to restitution.
