Subcontracting and the social structure of the working class in the shipbuilding industry: the recomposition of a “blue collar aristocracy”?

This article analyses the current social structure of the working class as it is being transformed by the simultaneous presence of subcontractors and “home” workers by referring to the case of a shipbuilding yard in Saint‑Nazaire, where the management methods rely heavily on national and foreign outsourcing. First, the analysis sheds light on the complex working relationships – both conflictual and integrative – between the “home” workers, subcontracted workers of French origin and foreign subcontracted workers. These relationships are shaped by two main variables: employment status and national origin. Second, the article helps to understand the destabilizing effects of subcontracting on the “stable” workers: the latter still detain the highest status of the working class, relying on their feeling of technical and social superiority over the subcontracted workers.

Cet article analyse les effets de la coprésence d’ouvriers sous‑traitants et d’ouvriers « maison » sur la configuration du monde ouvrier à partir du cas des chantiers navals de Saint‑Nazaire, où les modes de gestion de la main‑d’œuvre recourent massivement à la sous‑traitance nationale et étrangère. L’analyse des interdépendances entre les différents segments ouvriers en présence (ouvriers « maison », ouvriers sous‑traitants nationaux et ouvriers sous‑traitants étrangers) permet en premier lieu d’étudier des relations de travail complexes, entre coopérations et conflits, façonnées à la fois par le statut d’emploi et l’origine nationale. Elle permet aussi d’appréhender les effets déstabilisants de la sous‑traitance sur les ouvriers « stables » qui détiennent les attributs d’une « aristocratie ouvrière » et un sentiment de supériorité technique, mais aussi « sociale » par rapport aux sous‑traitants.
