La première publication américaine d'une grammaire de portugais langue étrangère : le A portuguese and english grammar (Baltimore, 1820)

Abstract : The French author and grammar book mentioned in the title are both important references to the history of teaching / learning foreign languages. Father Pierre Babad (1763-1846), a member of the congregation of St. Sulpice, was responsible for introducing the teaching of Portuguese into American university academia, namely in Baltimore. It seems that his A Portuguese and English grammar was the first Portuguese grammar created specifically for an American audience. A « pioneer teacher », acording to Robert Smith (1945) in the only known study on this source. The purpose of this text is, in addition to the development of Smith's study in light of new data on foreign language didactic grammar, to analyze Pierre Babad's grammatical ideas not yet treated and situate them within the framework of French Idéologie for a better dissemination of a little known work and author.
