As if heading the expression "The truth is the first casualty of war", Geoffrey Hill's poetic language has long been involved with complexities that point to lost truths. All of his poetry collections have focused to someextent on the problem of war, and most recently the focus has been on the Battke of Britain as he experienced it in his childhood. The Triumph of Love speaks about Coventry, the place young Hill saw burning in the dustance. Speech ! Speech!contains furthrt allusions to wartime Britain. Canaan opened a space of tension between Chrurchill and the German Resistance that has continued in these more recent volumes. Hill's poems sustain no national mythology, on the contrary, they attempt to deconstruct such notions. Coventry is now a place of reconciliation.
