Système graphique et normes sociales : pour une analyse électronique des écritures médiévales
Résumé
The research project Graphical system and social norms: towards a computer-aided analysis of medieval scripts aims at analyzing and categorizing the diverse handwritings and scripts through their graphical systems, i.e. the use and correlation of different forms within each particular script. As such, this method exceeds the binary classifications and entitles to draw conclusions on scribal practices and social contexts.
Its core principle is the extension of allographetical observations to the complete alphabet and writing system, taking the context of the letter into account, and to measure the variability of the scripts’ systems through statistical analysis. The study relies on large data corpora (Catalogues of dated and datable manuscripts) and interoperable standards (TEI, MUFI) and is a new, parallel way to image analysis and categorization.
