Sustainable development in serious games: rethinking game-based learning strategies for master's degree engineers

Résumé

Sustainable development and sustainability assessment is one of the most important challenges of our time. On the other hand, game -based learning (GBL) is proven to increase soft skills, such as critical thinking, creative problem solving and teamwork, as well as to improve cognitive development, learning retention and social learning, which are of vital meaning for future sustainable aware researchers and professionals. Additionally, the literature review indicates that there is a complete lack of studies in integrating social and environmental sustainability into serious games. The purposeof the study is to integrate sustainability issues into educational project management using an existing serious game as educational tool and thus to create a new sustainable informed basis for serious games in master’s degree engineering courses. The proposed scenario indicates that the focus is on both the deliverable/product of the project, such as the project specifications, requirements, deliverable, quality criteria and materials used as well as the delivery/process of the project, such as management planning and project sequencing. Through a case study all the game characteristics that can evolve in order to include sustainability concepts are presented.
