The archive of the Archconfraternity of San Giovanni Decollato in Rome holds two manuscripts with illuminated frontispieces containing the statutes of the brotherhood. The first is dated 1518 and appears to be by the workshop of Attavante degli Attavanti while the second, including the date 1581, is by the hand of a skilled painter of the late cinquecento. Apart from bringing these two works into the light, their examination in tandem allows for an interesting comparison in a well-defined context. It is in fact possible to observe how the artists adapted their visual culture while at the same time seeking to maintain a subtle balance between tradition and innovation. Furthermore, contextual and archival evidence help comprehend how these images integrated a vaster cluster of devotional objects and ritual practices.
L'archivio dell' Arciconfraternita di San Giovanni Decollato a Roma detiene due manoscritti con frontespizi illuminati contenenti gli statuti della fraternità. Il primo è datato 1518 e sembra essere prodotto del’atelier d’Attavante degli Attavanti. Il secondo, portando la data 1581, appartene a un pittore sperimentato del tardo Cinquecento. Oltre a mettere in luce queste due opere, il loro esame in tandem consente un confronto interessante in un contesto ben definito. È infatti possibile osservare come gli artisti abbiano adattato la loro cultura visiva, cercando allo stesso tempo di mantenere un sottile equilibrio tra tradizione e innovazione. Inoltre, l'evidenza contestuale e archivistica aiutano a comprendere come queste immagini facevano parte di una rete d’oggetti devozionali e pratiche rituale.
