Les principales pierres meulières utilisées en Champagne-Ardenne : gisements, matériaux, utilisations

Abstract : Champagne-Ardenne is a region covering a large part of the concentric sedimentary deposits of the eastern Paris Basin (Mesozoic and Cenozoic) that intersect with the southern Ardennes Massif (Palaeozoic). The region comprises different lithic resources that it largely shares with the adjacent areas. Yet Champagne-Ardenne also has the distinction of having a large area called the chalk plain that is theoretically devoid of rocks suitable for the manufacture of millstones. This renders the area interesting for the study of the spread of macro-lithic tools. The inventory of the main millstone rocks proposed in this paper has benefited both from the last 10 years of study of millstone assemblages by the Groupe Meule, and more specifically, from the comprehensive millstone survey undertaken from 2010-2013 in the framework of the research project “The typological and technological development of millstones from the Neolithic to the year One Thousand”. This paper, on the one hand, presents the local millstone materials present in the region (sandstone, limestone, burrstone) and then describes the imported materials from surrounding major millstone producing basins (arkoses, conglomerate, basalts).
