Adsorption of Alkanes in the Dense Vapor Phase on a Microporous Activated Carbon

Résumé

Adsorption isotherms and enthalpies of adsorption of supercritical methane and n-propane, n-pentane, and n-heptane in the dense vapor phase were determined on a fully characterized microporous activated carbon (AC) over a wide range of temperature [303.15 (K)-443.15 (K)] and pressure [0.1-2 (MPa)]. These measurements were performed using a homemade manometric-calorimetry device (Mouahid et al. 20121). The most striking adsorption behaviors were encountered: (1) at low coverage zone, preferential adsorption of the n-alkanes is increasing with chain length; (2) at higher pressures and higher fluid densities, where the adsorbate-adsorbate are predominant, a linear regression was found between the adsorption enthalpies and the number chain segment. These original data obtained in a very broad experimental [P,T] range represent meaningful information which can be used for theoretical development. © 2017 American Chemical Society.
