Being resilient to droughts? Geohistorical perspectives in Alsace (18 th – 19 th centuries)

Alsace Narrative sources allow understanding the reactions of societies to climatic events over history. Major deficits in precipitation, a signal of droughts, have often been documented by our ancestors. Some episodes have encouraged societies to adapt, or even to become resilient. This paper aims to show how Alsatian societies confronted such event with relation to different territories (Rhine plain, Vosges valleys, towns and countryside…). The focus lies on the impact of historical " climate change " (meteorological and hydrological extreme) as well a anthropogenic pressure (water abstraction, dams, flow regulation…). Finally different degrees of natural hazard and resilience are confronted in order to study the resistance capacities of societies to these dry shocks.

Les sources documentaires permettent d'appréhender les réactions des sociétés à des événements climatiques dans l'histoire. Le déficit de précipitations, caractérisant les sécheresses, est souvent noté par les contemporains. Certains épisodes ont conduit les sociétés à s'y adapter, voire à y être résilientes. Le propos mettra alors en évidence comment les sociétés alsaciennes faisaient face à ces événements, selon les territoires. Il s'agira également de confronter des degrés d'aléa et de résilience afin d'étudier les capacités de résistance des sociétés à ces chocs arides.
