In Noé, the city of Marseille finds exceptional favor with Jean Giono, normally a disdainful observer of the absurd existence of city-dwellers. It even becomes the scene of a flourishing surge of nature and life, containing even the locus amoenus of the pastoral. Noé can be shown to echo in odd ways with one of the first texts of ecocriticism, The Machine in the Garden by Leo Marx. Nevertheless, Giono twists the perspectives to turn his urban Eden into a masterpiece of artifice and imagination.
