Abstract : this article deals with the syntax of personal pronouns and focuses on clitic pronouns, which are one of the major sources of variation across the Romance languages. For each parameter of variation (e.g. placement, climbing, doubling, interpretation, etc.) the article seeks to establish descriptive generalisations based on a rich array of data gathered from present-day varieties and historical vernaculars.
