Retour à Bagacum : une expérience interactive dans le programme "Cyberforum"

Abstract : The graphic representation of the 3D relief is an illusionist representation which gives us a mental picture of our environment. For the local archaeological museum/site of Bavay, this new tool offers multiple combinations making it possible to create a vast network of data adapted to various types of public. A first line of development allows us to exploit the information available on the forum relating to the second century, the period containing the greatest amount of archaeological information known to us. A first architectural model in static volume was created to make it possible to appreciate the reconstruction hypotheses. These problems were discussed by specialists of different disciplines brought together in a scientific monitoring committee. On entering the recreated virtual models, it was necessary to reduce the error margin by collecting and resizing the available documentation without losing any of the realism expected of the representation. The question remains unanswered as to the limits of the work of photo reality for researchers unless agreements of identical and shared representations are established. Reflective analysis has been initiated in this area and a first analysis has begun on the lighting pertaining to the classical period within the framework of a partnership with the Laboratory of Data processing of the “University du Littoral” (program OASIS). The second line of development is to bring together objects, materials, historical facts and characters into a single tool with a view to presenting the most realistic and complete image possible of the forum and the events held there to a wide public. An area of development might have been the reconstruction of spaces in scale 1:1. This creation of antique decorations allows us to take the visitors to the heart of a historical site by combining informative contents and moments loaded with emotion. The pitfall we encountered, once architecture was up, was that there was only a single, static model proposed which needs to be animated: this it necessary to bring the place to life and to make it last. The representation of the forum via 3D digital reconstruction aided by the relief ruins, though an illusion, offers a mode of visual communication accessible to a large number of people, and also allies total flexibility, interactivity and evolution capacities. Combined with the other media (exhibitions, publications, static models, conducted tours, hyperguides (PDA)), the digital film becomes a leading educational tool. The third line of development concerns the constitution of a database which interconnects and evaluates the multiple sources of information, offers an individualized reading, creates new dynamics of research and shared knowledge. This part of the Cyberforum program will become exploitable in 2005 thanks to the installation of electronic communication and information terminals. Customized requests of information, in sources shared according to their constitution, hidden behind, the illusionist decoration, are dissected, sorted and explained. The computerized product becomes a tremendous common tool for work and presentation. This toolis continually updated and enhanced as the research advances and as the modes of knowledge transmission and cultural heritage evaluation improve.
